What Is Oral Surgery?
Oral surgery covers procedures that involve the teeth, gums, jawbone and soft tissues of the mouth beyond routine fillings and cleanings, from tooth extractions and bone grafting to implant placement and gum surgery.
Many people assume these procedures mean a hospital visit or a referral to another office. For most patients, that is not the case. At Family Dentist Tree, surgical care is carried out in our own dedicated surgical suite in Oakville, supported by 3D CBCT imaging and a full range of sedation options. Our team includes an on-site periodontist, a specialist in the gums and the bone that supports the teeth, and a dentist with fellowship training in implant surgery.
All of our dentists are registered with the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO), which sets the standards for safe surgical and sedation practice in the province.

Surgical Treatments We Provide
In addition to wisdom teeth, sedation, crown lengthening and frenectomy, our surgical services include the following.
Tooth extractions
A simple extraction removes a tooth that is fully visible. A surgical extraction is used when a tooth is broken at the gum line, has curved roots or has not fully erupted, and may involve a small incision and removing a little bone. Either way, the area is fully numbed first.
Wisdom tooth removal
Impacted or problem wisdom teeth are among the most common reasons for oral surgery. See our wisdom tooth removal page for positions, recovery and aftercare in detail.
Bone grafting
Grafting rebuilds bone that has been lost to infection, gum disease or a missing tooth. Common forms include socket preservation at the time of extraction, ridge augmentation to widen a narrow jaw and sinus lifts in the upper back jaw.
Dental implant placement

Gum surgery and grafting
For advanced gum disease, periodontal surgery cleans deep pockets that a regular cleaning cannot reach. Soft tissue grafts cover exposed roots caused by gum recession, reducing sensitivity and protecting the tooth.
Biopsies
If a sore, lump or patch in the mouth does not heal, a small tissue sample can be taken and sent to a pathology laboratory. Most results are reassuring, and early answers matter when they are not.

Gum and Soft Tissue Procedures, Explained
Crown lengthening
Sometimes a tooth breaks or decays below the gum line, leaving too little tooth above the gum to hold a crown. Functional crown lengthening gently reshapes the gum, and sometimes a small amount of bone, so the restoration can be placed on healthy tooth structure and the gum can be kept clean. The cosmetic version evens out a gummy smile or uneven gum line, and is often planned together with cosmetic dentistry such as veneers.
Gum recession and grafting
Receding gums expose the root surface, which can cause sensitivity, make teeth look longer and raise the risk of root decay. A soft tissue graft uses a small piece of tissue, usually from the palate or a donor material, to cover the exposed root and thicken thin gums so recession is less likely to continue.
Frenectomy for children and adults
A frenum is the small band of tissue that connects the lip or tongue to the gums or the floor of the mouth. When it is too tight, it can affect feeding, speech, gum health or the space between the front teeth. A frenectomy releases it in a quick procedure, and healing is usually fast, especially in children.
Sinus lift
The upper back teeth sit just below the sinuses. After those teeth are lost, the sinus often expands downward and the bone becomes too thin for an implant. A sinus lift gently raises the sinus membrane and adds bone graft beneath it, creating enough height to place an implant securely.
After an Extraction
Why Socket Preservation Matters
When a tooth is removed, the bone that held it begins to shrink, with much of that change happening in the first few months. That can make a future implant harder to place and, on front teeth, can leave a visible dip in the gum line.
Socket preservation means placing bone graft material into the empty socket right after the tooth comes out, often covered with a protective membrane. The graft acts as a scaffold that your own bone gradually grows into. It adds only a few minutes to the extraction and can save a more involved grafting procedure later.
If you are having a tooth removed and think you may want an implant later, mention it at your consultation. Planning for the replacement before the extraction usually gives the best long-term result.

Every surgical procedure starts with thorough local anaesthetic. Sedation is added when it helps you feel more at ease.

How We Keep Surgery Safe and Predictable
A complete health review
Conditions such as diabetes, heart problems and bleeding disorders, and medications such as blood thinners and bone-strengthening drugs, all affect surgical planning. We review them in detail and coordinate with your physician when needed.
3D imaging before surgery
A CBCT scan shows the exact position of roots, nerves, sinuses and bone, which is especially important for impacted teeth and implant placement.
Sterile surgical suite
Surgery takes place in a dedicated room with strict sterilization protocols for instruments and surfaces.
Monitoring and follow-up
Patients under sedation are monitored throughout the procedure, and we check in afterward and see you for follow-up visits to confirm everything is healing well.
Recovery
General Recovery Guidance
Your instructions will be specific to your procedure, but these principles apply to most oral surgery.
First 24 hours
Bite firmly on gauze to control bleeding, rest with your head raised and use cold packs on the outside of your face, 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. Avoid rinsing, spitting and drinking through a straw.
Pain and swelling
Discomfort and swelling usually peak around the second or third day, then improve. Take pain relief as directed, ideally before the anaesthetic fully wears off.
Eating and cleaning
Choose soft, cool foods at first and chew away from the surgical area. From the day after surgery, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals and keep brushing the rest of your mouth.
When to call us
Contact us at (647) 362-8140 for bleeding that will not stop with pressure, pain that worsens after day three, fever, pus or numbness that does not fade. If swelling affects breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest emergency department.
Before Your Visit
Preparing for Surgery
- Bring a full list of your medications and supplements, and do not stop any prescription unless we and your physician advise it
- Follow the eating and drinking instructions you are given if you are having oral or IV sedation
- Arrange an adult to drive you home after sedation
- Avoid smoking and vaping before and after surgery, since both slow healing
- Have soft foods, cold packs and any prescribed medication ready at home
The cost of oral surgery depends on the procedure, any grafting and the type of sedation. Oral Surgery Questions
Do I need a referral for oral surgery?
No. You can book a consultation directly with our Oakville office. If another dentist has referred you, bring any recent X-rays or reports, or ask them to send them ahead, so we can avoid repeating imaging where possible.
Is it safe to have oral surgery in a dental office?
Yes, for the procedures we perform. Our office has a dedicated surgical suite, hospital-grade sterilization and 3D imaging, and patients under IV sedation are monitored throughout. If a case needs a hospital setting because of complex medical needs, we will tell you and help arrange it.
Will I be awake during oral surgery?
That is up to you and the procedure. Many minor surgeries are done comfortably with local anaesthetic alone. For longer or more involved procedures, nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation can leave you relaxed or deeply sedated with little memory of the treatment.
Should I stop taking blood thinners before an extraction?
Do not stop any prescribed medication on your own. Many extractions can be done safely while you continue blood thinners, using local measures to control bleeding. Tell us everything you take, and if any change is needed we will coordinate with your physician.
How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?
After a simple extraction, most people feel normal within two to three days. Surgical extractions and wisdom teeth usually take about a week before you feel back to normal, while the bone underneath continues to heal for several weeks.
Do I need a bone graft after a tooth is removed?
Not always. A graft is often recommended when you are planning a dental implant later, or when the tooth was a front tooth where bone loss would affect appearance. Placing graft material in the socket at the time of extraction helps preserve the bone so an implant can be placed more easily later.
