What Are Porcelain Veneers?
A porcelain veneer is a thin, custom-made shell of dental ceramic that is permanently bonded to the front surface of a tooth to change its colour, shape, size or length.
Most veneers are roughly the thickness of a contact lens, typically between 0.3 and 0.7 millimetres. Because they cover only the visible front of the tooth, they allow us to change how a smile looks while keeping far more natural tooth structure than a full crown would. Modern ceramics reflect light in a similar way to enamel, which is why a well-made veneer can be very hard to tell apart from a natural tooth.
Not all ceramics are the same. Layered feldspathic porcelain is prized for its lifelike translucency on front teeth, while lithium disilicate is a stronger pressed ceramic that suits patients who need extra durability. Your dentist will recommend a material based on the look you want, the colour of the teeth underneath and how much force your bite puts on them.

Many of the best results combine treatments. A common plan is a short course of clear aligners to straighten the teeth first, then whitening, then a smaller number of veneers where shape still needs improving. Straightening first often means less enamel needs to be prepared.

A healthy foundation matters more than the veneers themselves.
Veneers are bonded to enamel, and they last longest when the teeth and gums underneath are healthy and the bite is stable. Before we recommend them, your dentist will check for decay, gum inflammation, worn enamel and signs of grinding.
Usually a good fit
- Teeth that are stained in a way whitening cannot fix
- Chipped, worn or uneven edges
- Small gaps or teeth that look too short
- Mild crowding where you would prefer not to use aligners
- Old bonding or fillings on front teeth that no longer match

None of these rule veneers out forever. They simply mean the order of treatment matters, and getting it right is what protects your investment.
Common Concerns
What Veneers Can Correct, Concern by Concern
Deep or uneven staining
Some discolouration sits inside the tooth rather than on the surface, for example staining from certain childhood medications, fluorosis or a tooth that darkened after an injury. Whitening gel cannot reach that kind of colour, while a veneer covers it completely.
Chipped and worn edges
Years of grinding or a single accident can leave front teeth short, flat or chipped. Veneers rebuild the edges and restore length. If grinding caused the wear, we also address the cause so the new veneers are protected.
Gaps between teeth
Small spaces, including a gap between the two front teeth, can often be closed with slightly wider veneers. Larger gaps may look more natural if teeth are first moved closer together with aligners.
Small or oddly shaped teeth
Some people have lateral incisors that are narrower or more pointed than usual, which can make a smile look uneven. Veneers can give these teeth a fuller, balanced shape that matches their neighbours.
Mild crowding
When teeth overlap only slightly, veneers can create the appearance of a straighter smile without orthodontics. We will always tell you honestly when straightening would preserve more of your natural teeth.
Old cosmetic work
Front-tooth fillings and bonding tend to stain and chip with age. Replacing several older restorations with veneers can give a more uniform, durable result.

Shade and translucency
Real teeth are not a single flat colour. They are slightly warmer near the gum and more translucent at the edges. We choose ceramics and layering that copy this, and we pick a shade that suits your skin tone and the whites of your eyes.

An uneven gum line can make even perfect veneers look wrong. When it helps, gentle gum contouring is planned at the same time so the frame around each tooth is balanced.

From Consultation to Final Smile
Most porcelain veneer treatment is completed in two to three appointments spread over a few weeks, depending on how many teeth are involved and whether other treatment comes first.

Temporary veneers are a useful rehearsal. If you would like the edges a little shorter or the shape softer, tell us at this stage and the change is carried into the final veneers.

Good habits are what turn a beautiful result into a long-lasting one.
Keep cleaning around the edges
Porcelain itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth along the edge of each veneer still can. Brush twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste, floss daily and keep your regular hygiene appointments.
Protect them at night
If you clench or grind, a custom night guard is the single best way to protect veneers from chipping. We often make one as part of the treatment plan.
Use your back teeth for hard foods
Biting directly into ice, hard candy, pens or fingernails puts heavy stress on front teeth. Cutting hard foods into smaller pieces is a simple habit that makes a big difference.
Stain resistant, not stain proof
Porcelain resists coffee, tea and red wine very well, but the bonding cement at the edges can pick up colour over many years. Regular professional polishing keeps the margins clean.

What Affects the Cost of Veneers
We do not quote a single figure for veneers because two smiles are rarely the same. After your consultation you will receive a written estimate, based on the current Ontario Dental Association Fee Guide, before any treatment begins. The main factors are:
- How many teeth are being treated
- Whether any treatment is needed first, such as fillings, gum care, whitening or aligners
- The type of ceramic and the amount of custom layering required
- Extra procedures such as gum contouring or a night guard

Veneer Questions Patients Ask Us
Do veneers hurt to get?
Most patients describe the process as comfortable. The teeth are numbed with local anaesthetic before the thin layer of enamel is shaped, and many people need nothing stronger than an over-the-counter pain reliever afterward. Some sensitivity to hot and cold in the first few days is normal and usually settles quickly. If you feel anxious about dental work, sedation options are available.
Can porcelain veneers be whitened?
No. Porcelain keeps the shade it was made in and does not respond to whitening gel. If you would like your other teeth brighter, we usually recommend whitening first, letting the shade settle for about two weeks, and then matching the veneers to your new natural colour.
Can I get just one or two veneers?
Yes, but a single veneer is the hardest restoration to match because it sits beside natural teeth with their own translucency and character. We take extra shade photographs and work closely with our ceramist so one veneer blends in. Most smile makeovers involve the teeth that show when you smile, which is often six to ten upper teeth.
Does dental insurance cover veneers?
Because veneers are usually considered cosmetic, most insurance plans cover little or none of the cost. Coverage can apply when a veneer restores a tooth damaged by trauma or decay. We can send a predetermination to your insurer, and payment plans are available for treatment that is not covered.
How many appointments do veneers take?
Most porcelain veneer cases take two to three visits over a few weeks: a consultation with digital scans and a smile preview, a preparation visit where temporaries are placed, and a bonding visit to fit and finish the final veneers.
Will veneers look fake?
Well-planned veneers should not. The shape, length, surface texture and translucency are designed around your face, lips and gum line, and you approve a preview before anything is made. Overly white, flat or bulky veneers are usually the result of rushed planning, which is what the design stage is meant to prevent.
