Sedation Options

Talk to us about effective sedation choices. Paired with our amenities, friendly team, and soothing environment, your visit becomes a comfortable experience.

Nitrous Oxide

Safe for children and adults, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) keeps you awake but relaxed. It wears off quickly, so you can return to your day with ease.

Oral Sedation

Taken as a pill, oral sedation creates deeper relaxation. You’ll stay conscious but may feel drowsy and remember little of your visit. A driver is required.

Moderate IV Sedation

Ideal for surgical procedures such as wisdom teeth extractions, moderate IV sedation allows for a deeper level of relaxation while keeping you conscious and responsive.

Aftercare

Sedation effects wear off at different times, so plan to take it easy after your appointment.  Arrange for someone to drive you home, and give yourself time to relax.
Anxiety Control

Is Sedation Right for You?

Sedation dentistry can make a big difference if fear or anxiety keeps you from seeking care. It’s also helpful if you need a longer appointment, have a strong gag reflex, or feel especially sensitive to dental treatment. By taking the edge off your nerves, sedation allows you to stay comfortable and get the care you need.

Feel Safe With Us

Sedation is most effective when it’s paired with experience, compassion, and a calm environment. Our team is ready to help you feel at ease and will walk you through every step of the sedation process. While you relax in our calming environment, we’ll closely monitor your safety and well-being throughout your visit. As a privately owned practice, we’re fully invested in providing the best care.

FAQs

Who is a good candidate for sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is ideal for those with dental anxiety, fear of needles, a low pain threshold, or a need for extensive dental work.
Yes, sedation can help relax the muscles involved in the gag reflex, making your treatment more comfortable.
Nitrous oxide is best if you want to relax but still be awake and able to drive yourself home afterward. It’s ideal for mild anxiety or shorter procedures. We’ll often recommend oral sedation if you have moderate to severe dental anxiety or need a longer or more complex procedure. It provides a deeper sense of calm, but you’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. Our Oakville sedation dentists will review your health history, preferences, and treatment plan to help you choose the safest and most comfortable option.
For oral sedation, you’ll need to avoid food and drink (except small sips of water) for at least 6 hours before your appointment. This ensures the medicine works properly and reduces risks during your procedure. If you’re receiving nitrous oxide sedation, you don’t need to fast, but we recommend a light meal a few hours before your visit. Avoid heavy or greasy foods that might upset your stomach.
Sedation generally takes effect quickly. Oral sedation usually takes 30–60 minutes to reach full effect, so you’ll take it before your appointment begins. With nitrous oxide (laughing gas), the calming effects start within a few minutes of breathing it in and wear off just as quickly once the mask is removed.
Yes, when it is provided by a trained dental team with proper screening and monitoring. We review your medical history and medications, recommend the lightest effective level of sedation, and monitor your breathing, oxygen level, and heart rate throughout your visit.
With nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and moderate IV sedation, you stay awake and able to respond, but you feel deeply relaxed. Many patients having IV sedation remember little or nothing of the appointment afterward.
You can usually drive after nitrous oxide once it has worn off. After oral or IV sedation you cannot drive for the rest of the day, so you need a responsible adult to take you home.
Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes after the mask is removed. Oral and IV sedation can leave you drowsy for several hours, so plan to rest at home for the remainder of the day.
Some dental insurance plans cover part of sedation, especially for surgical procedures such as extractions or wisdom teeth removal. Coverage varies, so we check your plan, provide direct billing, and give you an estimate before treatment.
Yes. Nitrous oxide is commonly used to help children feel calm during dental treatment, and it wears off quickly. We discuss every option with parents first and always choose the gentlest effective approach.
Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative you breathe through a nose mask, and it wears off within minutes. Moderate IV sedation is given through a small IV line, produces much deeper relaxation, and requires an escort home.
Yes. Family Dentist Tree offers nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and moderate IV sedation at our Oakville studio at 86 Wilson St. Call (365) 305-5629 and let us know you feel anxious so we can plan your visit around your comfort.

5-Star Dentistry

“I just got my wisdom teeth out two days ago, and I was very nervous because of the horror stories I’ve heard of people’s recoveries. Either I’m some genetic freak or this dentist is truly amazing. I have almost no swelling or pain and haven’t had pain since I got home. The stitches are done very well. Even the nurse who gave me the IV was super nice and understanding. I couldn’t recommend this place more. I’ve been coming here for around 4 years now.”
Jake
“It was my first visit to this office for an emergency treatment. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. The doctor took his time to explain the procedure and put my mind at ease. The technology, equipment, and expertise are world-class at this office. The treatment, quoted as a 4-week procedure at my regular dentist, took one visit of 3 hours. I am extremely happy and satisfied with the treatment and outcome, and decided to move my file here and become a regular patient.”
Arpad
“The staff at Family Dentist Tree are always friendly and accommodating. I had a dental issue, and they took it seriously and were able to squeeze me in for a check-up.”

Magdalena
“I called the office yesterday morning because I had a bad toothache and was worried about leaving it over the holidays, with clinics being closed. They were able to squeeze me in with my own dentist (Dr. Jamari), who is great!. Sure enough, I have an infection, so I got my antibiotics, and I will be good for Christmas. Friendly, efficient staff! I highly recommend Family Dentist Tree.”

Who benefits from sedation dentistry?

  • People with dental fear or anxiety, including those who have avoided the dentist for years.
  • Patients with a strong gag reflex or difficulty keeping their mouth open for long periods.
  • Anyone having longer or more involved treatment, such as dental implants, wisdom teeth removal, or several procedures in one visit.
  • Patients with very sensitive teeth or difficulty getting fully numb.
  • People who find the sounds, smells, or sensations of dental care overwhelming.

How we keep sedation safe

Your safety comes first at every level of sedation. Before any appointment, we review your full medical history, current medications, allergies, and past experiences with anesthesia. We recommend the lightest level of sedation that will keep you comfortable. During treatment, your breathing, oxygen level, and heart rate are monitored, and our team stays with you from start to finish. We follow the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) standards for the use of sedation in dental practice, and you will always receive clear written instructions before and after your visit.

Preparing for your sedation appointment

BEFORE

Plan ahead

Follow the eating and drinking instructions we give you, take approved medications as directed, wear comfortable clothing, and arrange a ride home for oral or IV sedation.

DURING

Relax completely

We check in with you throughout. Noise-cancelling headphones, warm blankets, and your favourite show help the time pass easily.

AFTER

Rest and recover

Go home and rest for the remainder of the day. Avoid driving, alcohol, and important decisions until the medication has fully worn off.

What sedation feels like, in patients' words

People describe nitrous oxide as a warm, floaty calm, as if worries simply step back. Oral sedation feels like a heavy, comfortable drowsiness, and many patients doze lightly. With IV sedation, most people remember sitting down and then being told the appointment is finished. In every case, the local anesthetic still numbs the treatment area, so sedation handles the anxiety while freezing handles the discomfort. You stay in control of what happens, and we never begin until you are ready.

Understanding dental anxiety

Dental anxiety is rarely about one thing. For some, it started with a painful experience as a child. For others, it is the feeling of losing control, embarrassment about the state of their teeth, or simply the sounds of the drill. Whatever the reason, it is real and it deserves respect. Many anxious patients find that the first visit is the hardest part. We start slowly, often with a conversation and a gentle exam, and build a plan together. Sedation can then be used for the treatment itself, so you can get healthy without having to push through fear. Read more in our article on comfortable options for anxious patients.

Non-medication ways we make visits easier

  • Agree on a stop signal so you can pause treatment at any time.
  • Tell-show-do explanations before every step, so nothing is a surprise.
  • Shorter, staged visits when that helps you feel more in control.
  • A calm, spa-like studio with soft lighting, greenery, and sensory-friendly touches.
  • Entertainment and comfort with headphones, shows, and blankets.

Sedation for children and teens

Nitrous oxide is often used to help children feel calm during fillings or other treatment, and it wears off quickly so kids can return to normal activities. We discuss every option with parents first and always use the lightest effective approach. Learn more about our children's dentistry services.

Getting back on track after years away

Sedation lets us complete more care in fewer visits, whether that means fillings and cleanings through our general dentistry services or a coordinated full mouth reconstruction. And if a toothache cannot wait, our team can help with emergency dental care in Oakville, with comfort options available.

The cost of sedation depends on the type used and the length of your appointment. Some insurance plans cover part of sedation, particularly for surgical procedures such as extractions.
